FULPER GLAZE NOTEBOOKS FIND HOME AT PRINCETON UNIVERSITY’S MARQUAND LIBRARY OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE

From its 50-year hiding place under the eaves in the attic of the family home, to the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works for experimentation, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to be digitized and consulted for the book, American Art Pottery; The Robert A. Ellison, Jr. Collection, my grandfather’s 6 notebooks of handwritten Fulper Pottery glaze formulas have finally found a permanent home at the Marquand Library of Art and Architecture at Princeton University.

This past spring, my sister, Julie and I hauled a large beach cart wagon-type thing, containing the 6 original notebooks, hand written by our grandfather, along with the digitized copies on archival paper, (yes, with protective sheeting!) from our parking spot on Nassau Street to the Marquand Library of Art and Architecture in the newly renovated Princeton University Art Museum complex.

We walk the campus where our grandfather (class of 1895) and our father (class of 1934) had received their educations, past Firestone Library, where I had been lucky enough to have a library card when I worked at McCarter Theatre for 18 years (the bastard child of Princeton University). Past the chapel, where Julie, escorted by our dad, had stepped lively down that seemingly endless aisle to marry her own William (class of 1963). They were preceded by me, the maid of honor, spurring on the four bridesmaids ahead, like a sheep herding dog, while trying to remember all my other duties. Then Theatre Intime appears on our left, with its intriguing architecture and century old history of somewhat anarchic student-produced plays.   And, ah, finally, here is the Marquand Library…at last.
